IBC Global's 3rd International Conference on Natural Radiation & NORM

One Whitehall Place, Westminster, London

Monday 5 & Tuesday 6 March 2007

Download the Brochure

Significant difficulty and discrepancy exist in Natural Radiation & NORM: Past practices have resulted in legacy waste sites. Recycling and disposal of contaminated wastes pose a radiation risk to workforce, public and the environment.

"A major issue with NORM is the lack of awareness, both among the general public and in industry - this has consequences…"

"Introduction of regulation without careful assessment of the potential radiological risks may cause significant economic problems in some industries"

This 3rd International Conference on Natural Radiation & NORM will focus on the issues and challenges being encountered by those in industry, government and academia and will explore the solutions available.

International focus will fall upon the problems that arise when operations and/or other factors lead to an enhancement of radioactivity and subsequent increased risk of exposure. Awareness, disposal options, measurement, protection, integration of legislation and clearance & exemption are in need of clarity and consensus.

Natural Radiation & NORM will cater for a wide international audience, who will be able to influence, interact, learn and form new contacts and alliances.

NORM V will be devoted to the dissemination, to a wide spectrum of technical and regulatory personnel working in the area, of the new information/knowledge on exposures to radionuclides of natural origin in mining and other industrial operations involving NORM, including impacts associated with NORM residues and discharges.

In particular, special attention will be devoted to the following NORM topics: processing and use of zircon and zirconia, industrial uses of thorium, production of titanium dioxide, recycling of contaminated metals, extraction and processing of rare earths, and extraction, processing and use of phosphate minerals.

NORM V is being organised by the University of Sevilla, Spain, with the assistance of an international scientific committee and a national organizing committee, as well as  with the support of several national and international organisations. A complete program, covering in addition to the scientific side, historical and cultural aspects is under preparation.
